So what makes a Norg story norgworthy

When I started the Norg I had some idea of the sorts of stories I’d like to see on the site, but I’ve always taken a fairly casual approach to letting them be known, or be incorporated as “rules” on the site. My thinking was that the site should evolve around the community, not me.
But overtime, some conventions have been formed that we probably need to make new users aware of, to help them find their feet and also as a mark of respect for existing users.
So prompted by this post and Tama’s suggestion, let’s flesh out what you the community see as norgworthy stories. This is in no way singling out Durk, who has jumped in feet first - awesome stuff and welcome.

For my part, I like reading about first-hand experiences, tips and reviews and the odd things we notice around the place that aren’t picked up by traditional news sites, but are funny and relevant to a local community.
I guess if a piece is a personal reflection, of which the outcomes have no impact on the wider community then it probably belongs on a blog. If it is a personal piece or op-ed for a better word that has implications for others in the community then I’d say it’s norgworthy. It’s a hard line, because it really comes down to the subject. One of the most powerful pieces I’ve read was a couple sharing the story of raising a Down Syndrome child.
Remember though, that voting down is not a personal attack, it is just someone exercising their editorial control.
And on a final note, I like questions - when you have seen something and want to find out what happened - I think Norg is a great place to ask.
But that’s only me :)
So add your thoughts people …

I don’t have a problem with reposts from personal blogs, etc, but I wonder if others do? I’ve posted at least one story in the past which I’d consider newsworthy, but was a repost from my blog, and it was quickly voted down. (This may be a coincide - but I think I’ve seen similar trends in other ppls posts). What do others think?

I’m a fan of questions, too, but I’m not sure I’d understand seeing them in the same space as the news. I wonder if it might be possible to add a basic forum to the norg (a Norum?) where if people are asking things, they could do so there. Once the responses are in, I’d imagine a main news post of the collated answers would be more newsworthy/norgworthy. :)

So I’m new here, and I don’t know what has passed for Norg/NotNorg previously. I’ll post links to other stuff I found of interest, sometimes with a little editorialising, that I think you might find interesting too. They can be controversial and provoke discussion, but I like that. If that’s the point of the norg, cool, I’ll keep it up…
Blog posts can be very good if they’re saying something other than “*o hai therz nuthin in ma fridge lol”…
I have a question: To vote or not to vote? When to vote up, when to vote down? What is the voting etiquette? I voted a post down because I thought it was an ad (it wasn’t; my bad). Is it legit to vote something down because you disagree with the article, the poster, the comments, their hairdo, et cetera?

I think the question has to be asked, why are you reposting items from your blog? I think if the answer is because it’s a genuine piece of news that is likely to be of interest to a broad audience then I have no problem with it being on Norg. If you’re using Norg to increase your SEO or if the article is of interest to a limited audience then there are more appropriate aggregators. I’m sure the likes of Digg and Reddit will give your article the treatment it deserves.

I guess this is down to my post. I thought the post was a genuine article. The same as I would post a genuine article from the likes of The Age. Unless told other wise if there is something on my blog that I have written I will continue to post it here, maybe not with the link but the full body of text on NORG.

The post I made about the book store, I was surprised that it was voted down, it was informative and offered MY point of view on something that allot of people agree with.

Anyway I am new to the site and love it so if the rules are no blog posts then thats good enough for me. Keep up the good work guys. The site is awesome
