Linking gets me thinking…

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

I have written that my hope for PerthNorg is that one day most of the content we have on the site will be original content created by our Cit Js.
But I also thought it was worth exploring the value of creating links to other internet content, which you can do on PerthNorg by creating a ‘webpage link’ in the ‘File A Story’ section. You need to be a a Cit J to do this.
What this means is that if you find a great story that interests you on the web, be it from a traditional media source or a blog, you can share it with other Cit Js. So effectively we can source news from anywhere.
Sharing knowledge is an important part of new-media culture and sharing stories with fellow Cit Js is another way of doing this. Not everyone will contribute something they have created, but by allowing everyone to share something they find interesting, they become part of the news gathering process, they participate.

We don’t feed any news into the site automatically, so everything you see on the site has been placed there by one of our Cit Js. So given the amount news we have coming in, we have achieved a lot in a little time.
The other important point about creating links is that it opens up the news in traditional media to comments. Sure you can submit comments on a lot of news sites now, but only once they have been approved by the ‘moderators’ and also only for the stories they decide you should have a say on. It is all part of that old media way of thinking.
Sure not every story invites comments, but at least there is that option open to the Cit Js if they like. Probably the most bizarre thing I’ve seen in a while is The Age’s new media blog Citizen, which uses a blog to argue against the merits of new media. :P More on that one later …
So if you some across anything interesting in youre travels think about creating a link and share the news with your fellow Cit Js.

See you round the norg …
